YouTube Music's AI Experiment with John Legend, Papoose, T-Pain, & More

The What: YouTube Music is wasting no time with its AI integration in an experiment called "Dream Track" in YouTube Shorts. Powered by Google's DeepMind model, this tool aims to make anyone feel like a hip-hop star producer by using AI to craft short musical tracks. Currently tested by a select group of artists like Alec Benjamin, Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, John Legend, Papoose, Sia, T-Pain, and Troye Sivan, this tool allows creators to input ideas and select an artist, and voila—an AI-generated soundtrack featuring the chosen artist's voice is born for their Shorts.

Tell Me More: Though the 30-second AI tracks released so far might not win Grammys, they're notable for using the cloned voices of the singers. YouTube is also set to require creators to disclose when AI is used in content creation, a move seen as part of an "if you can't beat them, join them" strategy.

Say Word: The AI music-making raises questions about copyright, ownership, and creative control. Some experts believe artists engaging early with AI may gain more control over their work compared to those taking a wait-and-see approach. But, there's still debate over whether AI can replicate the true "talent" and magic of artists or merely create music that sounds more like computer-generated cover songs.

Final Verdict: Listeners will ultimately decide if AI-created music gives the same feel, but artists seem wise to embrace this tech early rather than hope it just fades away.

And Speaking of AI…

ASCAP members in Nashville debated the impact of AI in the music industry. Musicians experimented with AI tools for various tasks, including refining vocals and generating song ideas. While some saw AI's positive potential in enhancing tracks and aiding creativity, concerns arose about potential voice misuse and legal complexities. Early adopters viewed AI as a driver for increased creativity, despite uncertainties about its impact on privacy and creative control. This discussion signals a changing landscape in music creation.

In this track, West addresses the controversy head-on and touches on the Russian/Ukrainian conflict. Initially premiered on a Chicago radio station, the widely released version excludes a verse by rapper Lil Durk. Credited to a new duo called ¥$, hinting at a collaboration with Ty Dolla $ign, the independent release on Spotify sparks anticipation for a potential joint album between the two artists.
