Former Dreamville A&R Money Makinâ Matt Calls Out Music Producers
The What: Money Makin' Matt, formerly of Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) and Dreamville Records, recently took to Twitter (X) to address a common issue in the music industry: producers not getting paid. He emphasized that producers shouldn't blame A&R or labels for payment issues, highlighting the importance of proper agreements, invoicing procedures, and legal oversight.
Tell Me More: Money Makin' Matt's tweets serve as a wake-up call for producers, reminding them that the responsibility for getting paid ultimately falls on them. He advises producers to ensure their agreements are finalized, sign declarations for advances, and communicate effectively with A&R admin to submit invoices. Additionally, he stresses the importance of having a knowledgeable attorney to navigate contracts and payments.
âProducers: Stop blaming the A&R or Label for you not being paid. The producer agreement is between the ARTIST and the producer. So if you havenât gotten paid your agreement prolly isnt done, u never signed a dec to get a first half or you havenât connected with A&R Admin and submitted your invoice. The job is more than just making the beat. And make sure YOUR attorney is also staying on top of your agreements and payments. Thanks for attending my TEDxTalk.â
Say Word: Money Makin' Matt's credibility as a music industry veteran adds weight to his message. With nearly 20 years of experience managing top-tier producers and over 15 years as an A&R for major labels and publishers, he's seen it all. His tweets come amidst a larger conversation about the challenges faced by producers, highlighted by 808 Mafia's Purps venting over a $2.31 check from Warner Music.
