Grammy's CEO: AI Creativity Must Fit into Two Categories for Award Eligibility
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of The Recording Academy, discussed AI's role in the Grammy Awards at the Fast Company Innovation Festival 2023. While AI won't be directly awarded for creativity, the Recording Academy has defined two categories for AI-assisted songs to qualify for Grammy consideration. If humans write the song with AI performing it, it's eligible for a writing category. If AI generates the song, but a human singer performs it, it can enter the performance category. Mason acknowledged the evolving role of AI in music but emphasized the Academy's commitment to uplifting human artists.
New DAW Format Aims to Simplify Project Exchange Between Software
DAWproject, backed by Bitwig Studio and PreSonus Studio One, introduces an open-standard format for moving music projects between digital audio workstations (DAWs). This format, available in Bitwig Studio 5.0.9 and Studio One 6.5, covers various project aspects, including time formats, audio metadata, tempo, MIDI messages, channel states, plug-in data, and more. DAWproject aims to enhance project interchangeability, potentially benefiting users who frequently switch between different DAWs.
Songtradr Acquires Bandcamp, Offers Licensing to Artists
Songtradr, a music licensing marketplace, has acquired Bandcamp from Epic Games. This move allows Bandcamp artists to license their music to various media forms while retaining ownership and control of their music rights. Epic Games plans to explore partnerships with Songtradr for integrating Bandcamp artists' songs into its gaming and metaverse ecosystem. Songtradr aims to continue supporting artists while expanding its suite of services.
